If you’ve read My Why, you know both broadcast and non-broadcast narration are wrapped with the golden thread I love – Sharing Knowledge. I can’t think of a more beautiful and powerful way to offer information to the people around the world than through spoken word accompanied with. The thought, the emotion, the technicality of it all – it’s awe-inspiring and stunning to me.
There’s an art to telling a good story. Each video, film and show has a specific reason for being – carefully crafted visuals combined with incredibly purposed copy. It’s my job and joy as the narrator to connect these elements together, to support and guide them but to never overshadow them.
Regarding the sub-genre of explainer videos, they’ve come a long way from the traditional “This is Bob. Bob has a problem”. Although I love Bob and think he’s a great guy, that voice over style doesn’t work for all products, companies and target market any longer.
I’ve voiced for clients in finance, healthcare, non-profit, automotive, insurance, construction, energy, retail, manufacturing and technology, and each time it’s a discovery of voice narration styles from commanding to compassionate. It all comes down to why the video is created and why the viewer is listening. I know this and I respect it greatly.
